Essential oil diffusers are incredible tools that will soothe the space of your own home or work, where their effects can be felt. They have long been used in aromatherapy treatments as they help to cleanse and promote soothing feelings around you. Although they are usually used for either aesthetic or therapeutic purpose, they also have some amazing health benefits!
With essential oil diffusers, you get to control what oils are dispersed in the air, with a controlled set timer and even a groovy light to create ambience.
If you want to take a more active role in your own health, and prefer a natural and proven method then purchasing an essential oil diffuser is a great choice.
Here are some precautions to consider before buying essential oil diffusers:
Before buying any essentials oils check to see if they are truely what they say they are. There are a lot of synthetic essential oils on the market today that do not provide any benefits to you otherwise, with so much use, can cause liver toxicity. A good way to check is to see if a certified label on the product before buying them, for example, organic soil associated label. Or, if they are retailed in a trusted store like Holland and Barretts. Do not be fooled by cheap deal prices that come in a set of 6 for £5 or even £10. You will not reap the amazing benefits of real essential oils and only inhaling synthetic ones.
Another precaution is to be careful if you suffer from any respiratory defects or prone to headaches, some oils would not benefit you. I would seek medical advice before you use essential oils.
Is essential oils safe around my children?
Apparently it is safe but I would also be precautious of diffusing oils around kids who are six months and younger. I read an article written by the NYTimes in 2019 and they quote, "For older babies and children, it’s reasonably safe to diffuse certain oils such as cedarwood, ginger or sweet orange for up to an hour while monitoring your child, said Dr Esparham". Another article from HealthLine also suggests," When trying out a new essential oil around your baby, test a small amount of each new oil in a vaporizer for an hour to ensure that no irritation occurs".
I would say if you still have any concerns talk to a doctor before using essential oils around your baby.
Are essential oils safe around my pets?
Yes, the only pet that is affected by essentials oils are cats. They lack the P450 cytochrome which means the liver cannot break down certain substances. According to the PDSA, the majority of essential oils are toxic to cats. However, according to an article from the Iowa Veterinary Wellness Center explains, "If you diffuse oils in your home, it should not cause a problem for your cat, as oil used in a diffuser is highly diluted... However, you should never leave your cat confined to a space where oils are being diffused".
So basically, you can use diffuse essential oils just as long they are not in the room.
Essential oils that least affect your cats are: lavender, copaiba, helichrysum, and frankincense.
